I've covered Master of Malt's "Drinks by the Dram" sets before in a post back in July (If you haven't seen it yet, you can check it out here), so when I was gifted two boxes - See the end of the post on how you can win one of them! - from a family friend and since the previous post was received so well I thought I'd do another post!
What was in my set?
What was in my set?
Sunset Very Strong Rum | Pumpkin Face 23 | Bombo 40 Rum Caramel & Coconut | Dead Man's Fingers Cornish Spiced Rum | Spit-Roasted Pineapple Gin
The Breakdown
Company: St. Vincent Distillers Ltd
Usually, when I see the words "Very" attached to an adjective I often find that they are overreacting and talking a lot of old bull, but this is definitely not the case with this rum. This rum punches in at 84.5% volume and will kick your ass if you aren't prepared for it. I tested it neat, and it sent my tongue into a different dimension (The taste and smell are surprisingly sweet - which is a plus in my books!), so I'd advise you take it with a mixer.
Company: Pumpkin Face
These bottles are just samples and do not come in miniature versions of the bigger bottles that they represent, which is understandable but this miniature doesn't do the pumpkin shaped normal bottle any justice! Click here to see the retail bottle.
The rum itself tastes really good. Fruit plays a major part of the note composition, along with a nutty medium taste note and an oaky lasting taste. This rum is 40% and aged for 23 years.
Company: Bombo
Straight off the bat, you will taste the syrupy caramel, flavour that lingers and then subtly makes way for the coconut notes that are there right at the start but are more prominent at the end. This is a 40% rum and is great to drink neat over ice - do not dilute that flavour with a mixer!
Bombo also makes Caramel & Spices and Caramel & Banana variants of this rum so I will be trying these ones in the future.
Company: Dead Man's Fingers
I actually had this one on my wishlist for a while and always see it on Twitter, so getting this one in my set was a great surprise.
Aged for 3 years, this rum is 37.5% and for me, and my partner Elyse (Sweet Elyse Blog), feel it has a very nice Cola taste accented with vanilla, caramel, nutmeg and cinnamon. I really enjoyed this smooth, yet rich-tasting rum and will more than likely be purchasing a full-size bottle soon!
Company: That Boutique-y Gin Company
This was a surprise as I don't usually drink gin, but then again, I'm game to try anything at least once. This gin does not make me think about the traditional gins that you might find in the shops or at the pub, it's something completely different and unique. If you are a fan of pineapples then this is a no-brainer, the taste is very sweet and is heavy on the charred pineapple, with notes of caramel, honey and cinnamon. Consider me sold on it!
All of these samples were excellent and were great to try out, so much so that I will be buying the bottles in the future.
